AURA
Márta Radics ceramic artist
24.04.2025 - 17.05.2025

In the design of her porcelain objects, she observes the interconnection and the form- and space-forming qualities of both the smaller elements that exist in nature and those that are the basic principle of architecture. Natural formations, like buildings, are made up of many components. This concept is the basis for her various creative, spatial structures, which in parallel reflect on different concepts: include - hide - grow - break out.

ARTISTS IN FOCUS

DOUGLAS BLACK

Douglas Black is an American artist based in Japan for more than 30 years. In 1992, he built his own kiln and studio in the Mashiko district, a place of ceramic tradition and the Mingei movement. It was the place Douglas chose to settle and where he developed his work, embracing both functionality and charm, celebrating the careful appreciation of culture in the presentations of food, drink, tea, and flowers.

"My works are inspired from nature and the beauty of our mystery. Within the timeless art of clay and fire comes a sense of connection to common spirits who have created ceramics throughout history, spiritually and functionally. Along the ceramic process accidental discoveries happen."

Black’s work draws on the Japanese aesthetics of wabi-sabi, derived from the distinctive taste of sixteenth-century tea master Sen-no-Rikyû, in his use of locally-available raw materials to produce irregularly shaped wares with the glossy black Setoguro achieved through the use of the hikidashi technique which is highly valued in the tea ceremony to this day. In fact, Black still produces simpler undecorated vessels for Japanese cuisine (washoku) and the tea ceremony (chadô), which he studies.

STRUCTURES AND SURFACES
International ceramics symposium 2025

4 - 29 August, 2025

The Foundation for Contemporary Ceramics (KKA) is a Hungarian non-profit organisation dedicated to the advancement of contemporary ceramic art. Each year, the Foundation organises one or more international symposia in co-operation with the world renowned International Ceramic Studio (ICS).

From the beginning, the Foundation has considered the promotion and support of contemporary Hungarian silicate art (ceramics, glass, concrete) to be its primary mission. In February 2011, the Foundation was granted public benefit status. Since then, its objectives have been broadened and articulated with greater ambition in the amended Charter. In addition to supporting contemporary artistic practices in ceramics, glass, and concrete, we are also committed to fostering the international recognition and development of Hungarian silicate art across craft, fine art, and design disciplines. In doing so, we actively build international relationships, promote Hungarian culture, and support cultural diversity.
