TÜKOR / MIRROR
György Fusz, ceramicist and sculptor

György Fusz, Noémi Ferenczy Award-winning ceramicist and sculptor, celebrated his 70th birthday this year. To mark this special occasion, an exhibition summarizing the development of his art and presenting his life's work was at the Kápolna Gallery in Kecskemét.
His works appear as organic formations in which mythological images, human creativity, mud, earth, fire, sea, curiosity, and scientific inventions are combined. It creates the right preconceptions for understanding an artistic program whose modernity is nourished by the interactions between universal human and natural processes.

Judit Pócs

Judit Tóth-Pócs is a felt artist and art teacher living in Kecskemét who has been working with felt since 1992. Her work is characterized by experimentation, with a focus on the spatial shaping of felt, to which she attributes her international success. She uses traditional felt-making techniques, creating her pieces by hand without the aid of machines. What makes her work interesting is that the individual elements are connected without any stitching. The exhibition offers a rich and exciting selection, ranging from restrained, monochrome works to pieces with vibrant color transitions.

THE ALCHEMISTS OF CLAY

a selection from the collection of the International Ceramics Studio at Szombathelyi Képtár Gallery, 12 Rákóczi Ferenc St., Szombathely.

The title The Alchemists of Clay alludes to the metamorphosis that arises from the meeting of material and fire, as well as to an experimental and innovative attitude. The selection showcases three fundamental directions: functional pieces, compositions of sculptural power, and transitional works. A special feature of the exhibition is the inclusion of works not only by ceramicists but also by goldsmiths and painters, along with large-scale works that rarely leave the confines of the Studio. From its founding, the Studio has consistently collected—and continues to collect—the works of high artistic standard created within its walls. This has resulted in a collection that is now known as one of the most significant international collections of contemporary ceramic art, featuring nearly 4,000 works by 500 artists from more than 50 countries.

After twenty-five years, Szombathely once again provides the space for the Studio to present itself, this time emphasizing the diversity and international significance of its collection.

Open until: 25 January, 2026.

ARTISTS IN FOCUS

FERGUS STEWART

Fergus Stewart is an internationally known ceramicist and producer of unique hand-thrown functional and decorative pieces, for use in the kitchen and on the table.

I work primarily at the wheel, throwing, altering and constructing by joining thrown forms to slabs and stretched thrown components. Many forms are finished away from the wheel by cutting and carving. Decorating and creating surfaces often incorporate local materials, with coloured slips and glaze in the green and bisque stages."

"Over time, I have developed a diverse repertoire of domestic and decorative forms that employ a comprehensive range of traditional pottery skills in their making and firing, creating a family of forms related by shared characteristics within the design, making and firing, sometimes challenging traditional concepts about use, and the presentation of food.

His work is made from stoneware and porcelain clays and is sustainably wood fired and salt glazed. The choice of colours is influenced by the vibrant greens, blues and natural tones seen from the Sutherland landscape and the rich and variegated surfaces decorated by the passage of the flame through the kiln.
